The electricity grid is the backbone of a successful European energy transition. The demands on this critical infrastructure will increase even further in the future as renewable energies become more integrated. Decentralised plants require additional grid connections, and large amounts of electricity from offshore wind farms need to be distributed. At the same time, security of supply must be guaranteed at all times and the grid must be protected against physical and digital attacks.



These complex requirements already pose a challenge at the national level. On the one hand, the convergence into a European electricity grid increases the security of the overall grid, but on the other hand, it adds further dimensions. Additional interconnectors linking national grids must be built and commissioned, and common standards and regulations for technology and operation must be developed. How far has European regulation come? How can the European Union shape the common electricity market? What steps need to be taken on the way to an efficient and future-proof electricity grid?
