Over the past four years, long-term power purchase agreements (PPAs) have become another important pillar of the expansion of renewable energy in Germany and the EU. Interest in the direct purchase of renewable energies in industry and commerce is high.



At the same time, the financing conditions for PPAs depend heavily on the creditworthiness of the power purchaser. The better the rating, the more favorable the access to debt capital for project financing. Against this backdrop, the EU is calling on member states to review and introduce risk hedging instruments for PPAs via the Electricity Market Directive (EMD) adopted in 2024.



The panel will take up this current topic and discuss with representatives from the energy and financial sectors which approaches should be chosen to further strengthen market-based financing of renewable energies and enable even more customers to access green electricity. Existing approaches from other European countries will also be reflected upon.
