Climate-Neutral Industry – How Can the Transformation of the Primary Industry Succeed

Welcome Address

| Dirk Filzek, House of Energy e.V., E-world programme partner

Prospects for the Defossilisation of the Primary Industry

| Dr Ann-Kathrin Klaas, EWI Institute of Energy Economics Cologne

The Cologne-based Energy Economics Institute (EWI) researches and advises on the increasingly complex energy markets. Dr. Ann-Kathrin Klaas, Head of the Energy Commodities Research Area, provides a technical introduction to the topic. Emission-reducing climate technologies must be used in a challenging energy industry environment, which is often characterised by limited energy availability and high energy prices. It will look at how this can be achieved and what contribution the energy-intensive basic materials industry can make to the energy transition in general and to the transformation of the electricity supply system in particular.

Transformation Roadmap for Industriepark Höchst

| Prof. Dr Hannes Utikal, Head of Process4Sustainability Cluster, Infraserv Höchst

Industriepark Höchst near Frankfurt is one of the largest chemical and pharmaceutical sites in Europe. To make the transformation towards climate neutrality economically successful, the companies based at the site have joined forces in the ‘Process4Sustainability’ cluster. Prof Hannes Utikal, head of the cluster, reports on the experience gained from the development of a transformation roadmap and discusses the intended approach to implementation. The existing infrastructure enables the industrial park to position itself as an innovation campus for the upscaling of innovative technologies. Case studies on carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) and industrial symbiosis are presented.

Trailblazer – 20 MW PEM Electrolyser in Operation at the Ruhrchemie Oberhausen Site

| Dr. Sebastian König, Air Liquide

In August 2024, Air Liquide inaugurated a 20 MW electrolyser on the Ruhrchemie site in Oberhausen. The project was developed as part of Air Liquide's strategic partnership with Siemens Energy for collaboration on PEM (Proton Exchange Membrane) electrolysis technology. The plant, which was connected to an existing hydrogen infrastructure, is expected to produce up to 2,900 tonnes of renewable hydrogen per year and serve customers in the chemical industry and refineries in the Ruhr region as well as applications in the field of hydrogen mobility. Dr. Sebastian König, Director Sales Electrolysis at Air Liquide, will present the project and discuss the feasibility and success factors of comparable projects in Germany.
