Pay to Produce: What Negative Power Prices Reveal in Europe

Negative electricity prices are no longer an exceptional phenomenon in Europe, but rather a reflection of profound changes in the energy markets. Drawing on current market data, this session compares developments in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands and explains why the same energy transition is leading to very different market realities. The focus is on the causes of negative prices, their impact on investments, power purchase agreements (PPAs), and project financing, as well as the role of grid expansion, storage, and demand flexibility. Finally, the markets are analyzed from a strategic perspective, and opportunities for future investments are highlighted.

Launch4 is a technology startup. The company develops its own data infrastructure, models, and methodology and tests them in real-world markets. This can be used for benchmarking electricity markets, forecasting plant revenues, assessing the bankability of projects, comparing locations and plants, and determining available grid capacity down to the level of substations.
