Electric Cars As Electricity Storage: Opportunities, Challenges and the Reality of Bidirectional Charging

Bidirectional charging is considered a promising technology for using electric cars not only as a means of transportation, but also as flexible electricity storage. The presentation will provide an overview of the opportunities and challenges of this development.

First, the basics of bidirectional charging and various use cases such as vehicle-to-grid (V2G) for grid stabilization and vehicle-to-home (V2H) for self-consumption will be presented. The focus will then be on economic and technological hurdles, including limited model availability, battery ageing and regulatory uncertainties.

Finally, an outlook on future developments is provided. What framework conditions are necessary for bidirectional charging to contribute to the energy transition? And is the technology already worthwhile for households and companies today? Among other things, the study “Intelligent Charging” by Prof. Dr. Lion Hirth, which examines the economic and grid-related effects of this technology, will be discussed.

Event series

This webinar is part of the series “Why Energy Storage is Key: Insights into a Moving Market”. The focus is on battery storage systems and the associated market development. As introduction, the focus will be on the potential of energy storage systems and how they can be integrated into the grid. Afterwards, the potential of bidirectional charging as a storage solution will be examined critically. In a further webinar, you will receive tips on how to optimally prepare your battery storage project in order to obtain financing from banks. The last event will shed light on the development of the BESS market in Great Britain.
