Green Portfolio: How Can Existing Heating Capacities Be Decarbonized?

Decarbonizing heat supply is one of the key challenges facing municipalities on their path to climate neutrality. But which measures make sense, what effects can be achieved - and where should you start?

The first presentation will outline specific solutions for municipal decision-makers. The initial focus will be on how municipalities can gain a structured overview of their existing data. Building on this, it will explain which decarbonization measures are available, what savings potential they offer, and how priorities can be set. Another focus is on a cross-sector approach: by intelligently coupling the electricity, heating, and mobility sectors, additional synergies can be leveraged and municipal portfolios can be decarbonized holistically.

The second presentation broadens the perspective to include international experiences. Denmark has been considered a pioneer in climate-friendly and resilient heat supply for decades. The presentation provides practical insight into successful Danish approaches to decarbonizing district heating systems and shows how the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels has been implemented. It also highlights the lessons that German cities and municipal utilities can learn from the Danish experience in order to decarbonize existing heating systems in a realistic, economical, and long-term manner.
