Pay to Produce: What Negative Power Prices Reveal in Europe

Negative electricity prices are no longer an exceptional phenomenon in Europe, but rather a reflection of profound changes in the energy markets. Drawing on current market data, this session compares developments in Spain, France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands and explains why the same energy transition is leading to very different market realities. The focus is on the causes of negative prices, their impact on investments, power purchase agreements (PPAs), and project financing, as well as the role of grid expansion, storage, and demand flexibility. Finally, the markets are analyzed from a strategic perspective, and opportunities for future investments are highlighted.

Launch4 is a technology startup. It builds its own data infrastructure, models, and methodology in-house, developed and tested against real markets. The vertical it has selected is energy, where it has applied this capability to Almena, a market intelligence platform for people making energy investment and operational decisions, including investors, developers, asset owners, and industrials. Almena pulls live price, grid, and regulatory data from sources across Spain and the rest of Europe, structures it through Launch4's own models, and turns it into actionable insights: benchmarking power markets, forecasting asset revenues, evaluating project bankability, comparing sites and assets, and identifying available grid capacity down to the substation level.
